New Brunswick: Leading the Smart Grid Initiative
NB Power is the provincial power utility for the province of New Brunswick. In existence for almost 100 years, it is mandated through provincial legislation to provide a reliable supply of electricity to its residential, commercial, and industrial customers at low and stable rates. By 2020, the utility is expected to have 40 percent of its in-province electricity supplied by renewable energy sources, and to be 75 percent non-greenhouse gas emitting.
In 2012, NB Power reached an agreement with Siemens Canada to partner on developing a future-enabling Smart Grid to help its customers reduce electricity use during peak times and integrate more renewable energy onto the provincial grid. This partnership offers a unique opportunity to leverage the talent and technology being developed, and establish New Brunswick as a global centre of excellence in Smart Grid technology.
New Brunswick’s Smart Grid initiative is also a true living example of innovation, excellence and collaboration. Through collaborating with partners in the private sector (Siemens), public sector (NB Power, Opportunities NB, ACOA) and academia (The University of New Brunswick), the province is showcasing the benefits of operating in a smaller, but scalable, environment.
