New Brunswick Export Award Winners: Bonté Foods

The New Brunswick Export Awards recognizes outstanding export performance by NB-based companies in the international marketplace. The Awards aim to celebrate the business savvy, entrepreneurial spirit, and innovation of businesses located in the province that have achieved either recent and/or ongoing success in developing new markets. This was a record-breaking year for submissions with a total of 30 outstanding New Brunswick companies in competition.

This week, we’re introducing you to the winners of the five awards handed out on June 1st,2015, at Moncton’s Casino NB.

The Exporter of the Year Award recognizes the New Brunswick company that represents an all-around excellence in export. The winning company is the one that demonstrates a significant increase in export sales over previous years, but also demonstrates solid market diversification, new product developments, and notable innovations.

Your Winner: Bonté Foods Limited

Chris BrothersOperating out of Dieppe, New Brunswick, Bonté Foods Limited is a manufacturer of over 300 food products. Producing food under the Bonté Foods, Chris Brothers, and Natures Deli brand names, they are currently the largest deli meat manufacturer in all of Atlantic Canada. As one of the region’s fastest growing and most diversified food manufacturers, their products can be found coast to coast throughout Canada. Bonté began operations in 1977 (then under the name Greco Foods) supplying Greco Donair restaurants with donair and pizza products. They now offer a variety of meat products, pita bread, sauces, soups, and bagels.

Bonté’s meat division sales soared 33 percent over the previous year in both domestic and export sales. They have also added over two dozen new products to their export offerings. New products and innovation has opened new non-traditional markets and that has provided opportunity, jobs, success, and delicious food for NB, and for people around the globe.

We asked Michael Whittaker, President at TruCorp Investments Incorporated, and President of Bonté Foods Limited, to comment on the company’s involvement in this year’s NB Export Awards.

ONB: As we’ve noted, this was a record-breaking year for submissions resulting in a total of 30 outstanding New Brunswick companies in competition, what prompted Bonté to apply for competition this year?

Michael: I guess because we thought we would win. We’ve been making major strides in launching new products and acquiring new grocery and foodservice listings. Anyone who visits their local deli will notice how Natures Deli, Chris Brothers, and Bonté products have been quietly taking up more and more listing space. We truly believe we are the leading Atlantic deli meat brand.

ONB: What does winning the Exporter of the Year Award mean for your business moving forward?

Michael: You know it’s always surprising to find out how many people don’t realize the Chris Brothers brand is made right here in New Brunswick. This award, and the ensuing publicity makes huge improvements to our product awareness. People want to buy locally made products. Also, it’s a tremendous validation of all the hard work our team puts into making great meat products every day. We have worked extremely hard to have world class food safety standards and a culture of excellence in our building. This award tells all of them- ‘”you did it!”  I guarantee you every person in the building is walking a little taller after that win. Great companies can’t work without great people.

Our congratulations to the team at Bonté Foods Limited on their big award victory!
